Day 75: Lay-by by Tennyson

Don’t get me wrong, this is a good song. But it does give me PTSD as this was on a playlist I used to revise to at university. It’s so relaxing, but I can’t hear the first few noises (and they can only really be described as noises), that are actually the warning for a car seat belt being undone, without having a mild stress about the commercialisation of early-modern theatre.

Tennyson are a brother-sister band formed of Luke and Tess Petty, originating from Canada, and they create really beautiful, electronic music compiled of complimentary sounds rather than a more traditional lyrics and beat combination. They have sighted Bonobo, James Blake, Aphex Twin and Flying Lotus as influences and the young siblings are carving out a niche within a world occupied by these giants that have gone before them.

Lay-by was released in 2014 on Soundcloud, accompanied with the caption “Hey. I hope this song reminds you to slow down. Sometimes the dark can be beautiful”. Now with over 5 million streams on Spotify, they are starting to establish themselves, having toured with M83, and it is all down to the success of this track. It combines a cacophony of noises, from the seat belt noise, to laughter, to a synthy keyboard. All of this stews together and creates a vivid picture in the mind. For me, it is driving down a dusty road, in the dead of night, with only the headlights illuminating a fraction of the road ahead. It is calming and introspective in a way that makes it a very easy listen, despite the parts comprising it being fairly abrasive noises at times.

If you’re having a lazy weekend like I am, then this is a perfect song to accompany you as the wee morning hours come creeping up on you.

Day 35: Motorola by Gorgon City

Another huge dance banger that I played CONTINUOUSLY on my student radio show last year. Motorola is a massive marmite track I will grant you, but I am a huge fan and I’m determined to get you all on board with this anthem.

House music titans, Gorgon City consist of duo Kye Gibbon and Matt Robson-Scott and have worked with the likes of JP Cooper, Duke Dumont, MNEK, Yungen, and previous featured artist Elderbrook. They have established themselves as a big player within the UK house scene and regularly sell out venues and grace big festival stages.

Motorola is a true house tune and has received negative feedback from Gorgon City fans who were introduced to them as a dance/chart artist. As with many artists we’ve featured, chart success has been a reflection of their success within the house scene, and Motorola is a throwback to the early days of Gorgon City. Memorable vocals and a heavy, easy to dance to the bassline, it is a great amalgamation of everything that Gorgon City stand for; new and old.

There is a really nostalgic feel to the lyrics “why don’t you put your number in my Motorola”, which is in reference to the very popular Motorola Razr flip phone, prior to the smartphone dominance. The use of old-school ringtones evokes great memories of middle school lunchtimes and after-school football sessions, whilst the sultry bassline makes it unavoidable to club DJs up and down the country.

I realise it’s a fairly decisive song, but give it a try and I think it’ll kickstart your weekend (I know it’s Monday; come back on Friday and rave away).
